Should I Put The Salary In A Job Advertisement?

A mutual understanding of the remuneration package on offer is an essential component of the recruitment process, and there is debate as to when this should be discussed.

There is a balance to find between being upfront with the salary offer in a job vacancy advertisement and waiting until the interview phase.

We find there is no right or wrong answer – though there are factors to consider which may lean you one way or the other.

Disclosing a salary will affect the number and quality of applicants.

Firstly, if you are offering a highly competitive salary with a generous benefit package, expect to be inundated with applicants.

This increase in applications will increase your chances of finding the perfect candidate, but comes at a cost of the additional labour required to review each application.

Advertising a salary in a job advertisement can lead to unrealistic expectations

As the old retail school of thought goes, you can always put the price up, but you will struggle to bring it down.

This applies when recruiting staff too.

Should you be faced with a range of applicants, or decide on an applicant who may not be a perfect fit, it is very difficult to come down on the advertised package and maintain a ‘good start’.

Consider this point carefully when deciding exactly what to advertise in your vacancy.

Consider your existing staff when advertising a salary in a job advertisement.

If your existing staff are expected to train the new addition, but are on a lower package, keep in mind how this will affect their morale.

Existing employees maybe offended if the learn to find the new member of staff is on a better package than what they earn.

Perhaps there are genuine reasons for this, but err on the side of caution.

Your competitors learn what you are paying your staff.

This point speaks for itself. If you are both trying to attract talent, their company can use your information against you by offering a slightly better package and beating you to the best candidates.

Conclusion

There is no right or wrong answer when considering whether to put the salary in a job advertisement or not. There are arguments For and Against.
